On a sunny, beautiful day, a crowd of cheerful participants began to gather for the "Balaton twisty steamship" season opening ceremony. In the area next to the Bárka Café we waited for a warm welcome to begin the opening. Mr. Árpád Kopasz led the mayors of Balatonboglár and Révfülöp and me on board the ship at 10:15 and the ceremony began. As is customary, the leaders of the two settlements welcomed the assemblers, recalling those present, their past of twisted people and destiny, and his message to the present. On behalf of the Brotherhood of the Coast, I greeted the participants and outlined the 146-year-old history of the Balaton twisty steamship, as follows.

Dear Mayor,

Dear Captain Gentlemen!

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I warmly welcome you to the opening season of the Balaton twisty steamship 2018 season. It is now a tradition that the Brotherhood is represented at an event representing the historical past of shipping in Lake Balaton. As our Brotherhood is involved in all activities related to shipping and the sea, it is a heartfelt association for us to promote the history of shipping in Lake Balaton and to preserve its material memories. It is a duty and an honor for us to attend this event. We have already introduced the organization, goals and history of the Brotherhood of the Coast on several occasions during the opening ceremonies of previous years. Now I am adding to the previous ones that this year is special for us as this year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Balaton Table. Twenty years ago, on March 28, 1998, the Hungarian Brotherhood of the Coast Association was founded in Keszthely.

However, now, while on board the Balaton twisted-deck, please allow me to summarize the details of the ship's 146-year history without being exhaustive.

And now the story:

"Balaton" is the second steamboat of the lake and its first twisty steamship was built in 1872 for the Zala-Somogy Steamboat Company. The hull was made at Péter Veruda Shipyard in Újpest, and the 80 hp compound steam engine was built at the Schimmelbusch Machine Factory in Vienna. Until 1876 he traveled between Révfülöp, Szepezd and Boglár. The ship also delivered mail, and had its own stamp printed on the letters for the postage. These ZSGT stamps are very rare and of high value, they are a specialty for stamp collectors.

The company went bankrupt in 1876 and the ship was auctioned off. He came to the Danube in 1879 and worked as a tugboat under the name Alexandra. From 1892 he sailed under the flag of Mohács, from 1901 under the name of Irma, under the flag of different owners. In 1930 and '31, the Fleischmann Antal Danube Dredger and Steamship Company, along with the Lajos József Lifeboat, replenished Lake Lágymányos. After the war, Irma, like many other ships, was taken west, and in the spring of 1945 it was sunk at Aggsbach to keep it out of the hands of the advancing Soviets. It was not until the summer of 1951 that it was recovered, and after returning to Hungary, the nationalized ship was transformed into a motor ship in 1954. He received a 160hp four-stroke four-cylinder Storck diesel engine and got the FKA (Flow Control and Gravel Removal Company) under the name of FK-312. The ship, expanded in 1973, was decommissioned in 1978 and set aside in Lágymányos Bay. Here he found dr. József Bíró, then head of the Navigation Department of the Museum of Transport. It was thanks to him that the well-redesigned old hull was returned to Lake Balaton in 1981. He came to Siófok on his own, but from there he was towed to Boglár. In 1984, the Balatonboglár Council highlighted its current location on the eastern side of the marina. After that, he served as a restaurant for many years, then due to his ever-deteriorating condition, he was entrusted with the problems of cultivation. Its fate has changed thanks to the work of the Balaton Boat Culture Association, when after a long renovation work in the summer of 2012 the Balaton Museum Ship opened its new function. Thanks to those who, through their work, are able to maintain today's status.

Dear Celebrators,

I wish that the sight of the Hungarian sea and the sight of our eye-catching boats will give us all a lifelong spirit and a good time.

Allow me to conclude with the traditional beliefs of the founders of the Brotherhood of the Coast over us:

                    "My ship is my ornament,

                    My God is Freedom,

My law is power and wind,

My only homeland is the Sea. ”

The next celebratory event is the presentation of a niche publication on the Balaton stamp and its history by the author, Mr. Árpád Kopasz, already in the interior exhibition space of the Ship Museum. It brought together extremely valuable information in the book, prompting many of us to buy it immediately.

At 12 o'clock, after the official ceremony, we boarded a boat in lightweight clothing and sailed to Révfülöp. The Phoenix carried the majority of those present, but we were also "distressed" on our Brother Clochard's ship. In a pleasant east-northeast breeze, the two ships crossed over in 25 minutes and occupied the set tables at the Reeds Bar. After a nice and anecdotal lunch and ice cream, we set off for Phoenix at Boglár at 3½ pm and our brother Clochard to Balatonszemes. On the way back, Captain Phoenix discussed privately the conditions of the October National Zaff Initiative with those present at the Balaton Table. Based on the decisions, the scribe of the Balaton Table will notify those concerned in writing.

After the mooring, we continued zaff in the Bárka café until 6 pm.
