We started gathering in the Balatonboglár harbor on a fresh but sunny morning for the 10 o'clock departure. Our Brother Phoenix suggested in advance that we start off in warm clothing and change to a festive outfit just for the initiation, covering the north shore. So we started at 10:15 with the two masters from Phoenix. The lake was blowing in a lively northeastern breeze, and the ship was sailing full speed towards Badacsony. Between the two masts was the flag of the National, our Tables, and our Captain Phoenix proudly flying.

We planned the initiation ceremony under the cover of Mount Örsi, where it took us over 40 minutes in a 200 m2 sail. On the way we had a cake party from the products of Marton confectionery. They were very delicious. Upon arriving, we sailed off the water in front of Club Tomaj and prepared for the inauguration.

According to tradition, the initiation began with 3 bells. Vagabund, the master of the ceremony, called the aspirants and godfathers and read the Octalogo. Then our National Captain swore and inaugurated our new brothers, Elenor and Turul. We welcomed our new brothers in the fraternity and handed over their numbered flags. After the uplifting event, our National Captain commanded Golpe de Canon with black powder.

After the cannon fire, we sailed to Badacsony harbor, took a bus and headed to the Wine Friendly Restaurant for lunch. We had a very pleasant conversation while serving rich and excellent food.

After lunch we took a bus to the Imre cellar, where we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Balaton Table on the very pleasant garden terrace.

Vagabund welcomed the congregation and paid a silent tribute to the memory of our sailed brothers: Sephia, Huszar, Senex, Iustus.

Following the tribute, our Knight National Captain commemorated the past 20 years:

„For the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Brotherhood of the Coast Hungary, and the Balaton Table

Dear Brothers! Dear friends!

The Brotherhood of the Coast are the alliance of people who are interested in the sea, in the love of water sports, and in the other areas associated with them. They are committed to the values of mutual friendship, total trust, assistance in shipping and social affairs. Their behavior between brothers or towards the outside world is characterized by solidarity, respect and tolerance. This alliance does not pursue political, economic, or religious goals. In essence, it is an impartial and neutral community.

So we join this brotherhood because we love the sea, we like to sail.

We join the Brotherhood and call ourselves pirates, but we only take the good and noble things from them. It's a game because we're kids again. A game that can only be played seriously and where we have to choose a fighting name, such as White Shark, Bitang, El Toro, Vitéz, Chlochard, Lupo di Mare and so on.

We encourage to use of this fighting name, but in addition, everyone has their own ID number and status.

The Brotherhodd of the Coast Hungary are also part of the Hermandad de La Costa, an international organization of Brotherhood of the Coast founded in 1951 in Chile. The Brotherhood of the Coast Hungary are unite all the “tables” in Hungary, which are without exception, subject themselves to the guidelines of the national organization. Worldwide, with around 200 tables around 30 countries, nearly 3,000 brothers are practicing hospitality under the black flag. Everyone, like sailors and people who are sea-going, recognizes the Octalogo, the eight law, wich as binding on themselves.

According to the guidelines of Hermandad de La Costa, the sailors establish so-called "tables", which have at least 7 members as local organizations. Scribe is elected next to by the captain : both are entitled to represent the table. All the tables of a nation are represented by the national captain (Gran Capitan) and the international watchman / scribe abroad.

But when did the brotherhoods of the pirates come back again? In 1951, seven Chilean sailors/sportsmen decided to establish a sailing club in Santiago de Chile and, following the example of the Coastal Brothers, differentiate their from other sailors. The Historical Heritage of Coastal Brothers in this Chilean sailing club has been revived. Seven sailors were sitting at the laid table, and they shared their adventures with the pirates, like robbers of the sea, not guessing that this spontaneous idea would later go around the world. The first "table" was established!

Worldwide, the organization was launched in 1951. The Alliance has found people everywhere who have been led by the love of the sea, shipping, and water sports to start their own table. Today, there are tables in over 30 countries, including North, Central and South America, Australia, Japan, North Africa and many European countries.

The sailors of these nations are connected not only by the love of the sea and the shipping, but also by joining a table to become members of a community where mutual trust, respect and tolerance are not just empty slogans, but actually existing in common programs like manifest values. There are moral norms that have emerged in the midst of the dangers of maritime shipping and any brother can lean on to follow - but that these moral norms to be calling him to account.

In the spirit of these values, it was created twenty years ago to nurture and convey the traditions of the shipping community, in 1998. The table was created through the steady and sacrificial work of our wonderful true Brother. He was our founding National Captain: Dr. László Pintér, our "Hussar" brother. And so was the community of Hungarian coastal brothers. Twenty years of "water" time is no longer short, we can be proud of it.

I wish our brothers will grow in numbers, health, family and friendship, and not least in lifelong boat experiences over the next twenty years!

After the solemn speech, Vagabund read the commemorative lines of El Toro, one of our founding brothers. (Unfortunately, El Toro was unable to attend due to his busy time.)

"2018 October

The Hungarian Brotherhood of the Coast is 20 years old.

How it began only Vitéz can tell. I met with Brotherhood of the Coast 20 years ago in 1998 in the middle of January. Horváth Feri, who is nowadays known as “Vitéz” invited me to his house for a meeting. When I arrived some people were there, I knew them for a long time and one man that I didn’t know at the time. He was László Pintér. We sat at the table and Feri presented us, and he said what is all about. It was about a forming of a sailing society and many of these people wants me among them. Laci told me about the short story of Brotherhood of the Coast, the Chilean foundation, the active “tables” all around the world, he also mentioned he was designated from Padua the bring the conception of the brotherhood to Hungary. The Italian brother thought, the freed Hungary of communism should be accepted in the free world and initiate a new “table” in it. In their idea the most suitable person was one of their brother “Huszár” because of his Hungarian bonds, and his dedication. This story really touched me and I felt sympathy. They ignored the tradition the selected people will be members of the brotherhood without being aspirants. He also told that they began the organizing months ago, they went on a sailing tour on the Adriatic Sea. The guests were also invited and the ceremony also has a date. One of selected person backtracked and somebody mentioned me that’s how I got in picture. He read the “Octalogo” and asked me if I was interested. I asked for some to think about it seemed a responsible decision. Who is inaugurated gets a number which one will be his and nobody can never get it ever. His name will be recorded for a lifetime. Becoming a brother is responsible too because whoever becomes your brother you have to accept with his best and worst and we have to think about him as a brother (sibling). I am Libra that is why I think things twice. Days later I said yes and would like to become a part of it. The ceremony was on the 28th of March in 1998. The Budapest Boat Show was happening at this time and I was also a exhibitor of it so I couldn’t be a part of the reception or couldn’t help the others in the preparation of the ceremony. So I invited Nándor Fa my friend and his wife to participate with us. You can read his kind words in the Diary of Balaton Table. The sight and the welcoming was really nice. It was in Hotel Helikon, there were flags and we had a separated room. The tables were decorated and the tableware was also prepared. The guests and solemn really touched my heart. Later I realized the big part of the guests came from the Venetian “table” we got the bell for our “table” from them. It is an eternal memory. When they said our names I almost didn’t know what was happening. I did what I was told to. They put a kerchief on my head, I kneeled on a pillow, and the ceremony leader touched my shoulders with a sword then I stood up and put a hat on my head. The other brothers came and welcomed me: “Welcome in the brotherhood!”

This was a point that defined the future and the affiliation for me. I felt I belonged to somewhere surrounded with love and friendship. This was followed with busy workdays. More and more brothers joined after the aspirant days. Some of them spent less time with us like “Sepia” who sailed away in 2004. We learned saying goodbye and the last was saying goodbye to Justus. The real loss was in 2006 when we lost “Huszár” in a short but a rapid illness. With the brothers we said goodbye in Padua with a solemn commemoration. Before his death he established the “Table of Budapest”. A lot of his friends and brothers participates. The bell of Budapest was given by him and he also designed the flag. He chose me the captain of the table and I was till 2016.

There are other who sailed out which is a fault of the reigning Brothers. The 2 years of being an aspirant is a very serious thing. The table has to require the reality of it to show how important it is. There were 7 founders, now it is “Vitéz” and I. “Huszár” sailed away and the others sailed out. They expected the Brotherhood of the Coast to do things for them but they did nothing for the Brotherhood. To keep it up it is work and lots of tasks. It is true for those brothers who spent being a quasi-aspirant. The aim is to keep up the number of the people and the operability. This is important but the real duty is beyond that. The inaugurated has to be a real brother. Tasks have to be chosen and they have to be made. I was glad that Miki Szilágyi became the Capitan of the “Table of Balaton”. We all have to be grateful for him. I would like him to do it for a long-long time. I wish him and everybody a good health, a good wind, a peaceful sailing for the future.

Kind regards,

El Toro

Ooooooooooooooooooooorza! Forward to the wind!"

Vagabund then invited our other founder, Vitéz, to present his personal experiences of the early period. Our brave brother demonstrated the essence of the Spirituality of the Brotherhood through photographs and personal memories.

To close the commemoration, our Captain Phoenix spoke. He was aware of the formation of the Brotherhood at an early age, but joined him later. He told in an interesting story on the why and the reasons.

The entire event was videotaped by our guest János Both, which will be posted on the web and ready to go. Towards the end of the day, it was discussed why John could not be our brother in the future, when he created it for his work, (portmaster's) profession (shipbuilder), and hobby (video and sailor). On the spot, Vagabund recommended János Both to the aspirant, who were unanimously supported by the brothers after their introduction to János.

In closing, we sang the "Va 'pensiero" together.

We returned to the harbor at 5 and set sail for Boglár under sails. The eastern wind remained, as did the sunshine, and after a pleasant 1½ hours we moored in Boglár.

After unpacking and taking a photo, we said goodbye to each other and started our journey home full of excitement.

For me, this gathering also proved that brotherhood is alive, working, and represents the spirit of Octalogo. We had a very enjoyable day together. ... Oooorrrrza.
