The origins of the Brotherhood of the Coast date back to April 4, 1951, to Chile. Seven great sailors, while sat around a "table", played with the idea of creating a seaside fraternity community named Hermandad de La Costa. One of them, Anselmo Hammer, traveled around the country and brought the brotherhood's idea. This simple and romantic idea awakened the seafarers with the great sea legends of the past. The idea was quickly embraced by the Chilean lovers of sailing, and its reputation was also overseas by the maritime and cultural representatives of Chile, first in Europe and then on other continents. This made the idea of Brotherhood international.

The legacy of romantic symbolism, traditions and positive values of fraternity are collected and continued by the current International Association, which retains the name of Hermandad de La Costa. The Association unites the traditions of knighthood in the framework of all the nations who are passionate lovers of marine life. The sea is a connecting clamp between peoples of different cultures, whose sea is inspired, and an endless source of noble and sincere ideas of life.

In a world where the only rule seems to be selfishness and indifference, the Hermandad de La Costa shines like a beacon to guide ships towards the nobler goals of life. The sea gives us the deep motivations that help us find our spiritual values, that inspire us to follow the noble ideals of life.
