Meeting of the past

Meeting of the past in Balatonboglar

On Sunday morning 22.09.2024 at 9 am we left with the Phoenix boat to Révfülöp. There we picked up our passengers and sailed back to Boglár. After our arrival, we sat down for a historical chat in the café next to the historic Balaton tramp steamer.

Those present at the meeting:

Guido Dernbauer and his wife Mónika

Phoenix, captain of the Balaton Table

Árpád Kopasz, manager of the Balaton Steamer Balaton

Balázs Kopasz President of the Association for the Culture of Balaton Boatmen (BHKE)

Vagabund the clerk of the Balaton Table

All this happened because Phoenix, the captain of the Balaton Table, decided to present the past of sailing life in Balatonboglar with facts, stories and authentic historical data. One of the defining episodes of his youthful sailing life is linked to Révfülöph, where he met Guido Tasnády v., a naval officer, commander of the river flotilla and captain of the SzOT Balaton sailing fleet. Recalling the memories of their sailing together, he began to search for the remaining records and stories of the past. The result of the search, with a little luck, was that it turned out that the legacy of the distinguished naval officer still exists in Révfülöp, and that this legacy is being preserved and managed by his grandson Guido Dernbauer and his wife. Although they live in Vienna, they regularly visit Révfülöp.

The talk was very inspiring, with photos and documents. However, it was clear to all present that there are still many gaps in the past that need to be filled. This can be helped by D. Guido's mother (T. Guido's daughter, who also lives in Vienna), shipping documents on the Internet and books on the subject. One of these is "The Lost Heritage" by Dr János Schláth.

Captain Phoenix has agreed to arrange a personal meeting between Dr János Schláth and D. Guidó.

The BHKE is also interested in the preservation and presentation of artefacts and historical documents, and the possibility of a future exhibition has been outlined. Of course, this would require a lot of preparation and work, but the participants agreed to take it on.

After the interesting conversation, we visited the exhibition of the historic ship, said goodbye to Árpád and Balázs, and then went to the Hegyi Borterasz, a small mountain oven restaurant, for lunch in Captain Phoenix's van. Although we had ordered the goose legs and ribs in advance, we had to wait an hour for the otherwise excellent food, which did not please the writer of these lines. (The others were much more tolerant...) While waiting for lunch, we had a conversation reminiscent of the past, in a great atmosphere.

At the end of lunch, we returned to Boglár, where Guido and Mónika, led by Captain Phoenix and his boat, the Hope, set off back to Révfülöp.
